Ex-Ecuador football chief Chiriboga receives life ban

-- 22 March,2019

Quito, March 22: Former Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) president Luis Chiriboga has been banned for life and fined more than a million US dollars for corruption, world football governing body FIFA said.

Chiriboga was found guilty of accepting bribes in exchange for awarding lucrative media and marketing rights for tournaments such as the Copa America and Copa Libertadores, reports Xinhua news agency.

“The adjudicatory chamber found that Mr Chiriboga had breached article 27 (bribery) of the 2018 edition of the FIFA Code of Ethics and banned him for life from all football-related activities… at both national and international level,” FIFA said in a statement on Thursday.

It added that Chiriboga was fined a million swiss francs ($1.01 million).

The 72-year-old, a former member of FIFA’s standing committee and the South American Football Confederation’s (CONMEBOL) executive committee, was jailed for 10 years by an Ecuadorian judge in 2016 for graft.

He was in charge of the FEF for 18 years before being placed under house arrest in 2015.
