Modi govt ignored us, will not vote for it: Farm union

-- 01 May,2019

Amritsar, May 1,

Holding the Narendra Modi-led Central government responsible for the agrarian crisis, farmers under the banner of the Indian Farmers’ Association (IFA) launched a crusade against the BJP candidates contesting the Lok Sabha election.

The BJP in its 2014 manifesto had promised to implement the MS Swaminathan Commission report, increase minimum support prices to 1.5 times the cost of production for various crops, rationalise agricultural markets and make institutions for more efficient procurement.
Satnam Singh Behru, IFA national president, claimed that the Modi government didn’t keep its promises made to the farming community and it was unanimously decided by farmers under our banner to boycott the BJP candidates so that Modi should not come to power again.

“Now is the time to teach the BJP a lesson. We will be visiting villages to urge people not to support the BJP candidates. We have appealed to people to vote against the BJP candidates contesting at Amritsar, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur seats. We will give a similar call in other states too. So far, we are supporting Khadoor Sahib PDA candidate Bibi Paramjit Kaur Khalra but a committee has been formed to take a final call on the rest of the nine seats.”
Dejected by the affidavit reportedly filed by the BJP-led Central government in the Supreme Court that it never wanted to implement the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission, Satnam, who is a petitioner against the government’s move, said the BJP had “backstabbed” the farming community. “While it favoured waiving the loans of corporate sector, it was reluctant to do so for farmers.”

Meanwhile, Baldev Singh Damheri, IFA state president, said: “Nearly 60 per cent of the people are involved in farming. Not all, but most of the major farmers’ associations have expressed solidarity with us.”
