PM Modi, BJP trying to polarise nation: Sitaram Yechury

-- 20 July,2018

Chandigarh, 20 July: The general secretary of Communist Party of India (Marxist), Sitaram Yechury, censured the government over the spate of lynching incidents across the country and alleged that “the Prime Minister and the Bharatiya Janata Party are trying to create a polarising situation.”

Yechury, who was in Chandigarh to attend the meeting of CPI (M) Punjab state committee here on Thursday, highlighted the attack on Swami Agnivesh. “The current situation in the country is such because the government, the PM and the BJP are trying to create polarising situation,” said Yechury.

“Government is doing nothing on mob lynchings. The horrendous attacks on common people have gone up to such an extent that the Supreme Court (SC) had to tell the government to draft a new law against mobocracy,” said Yechury.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday instructed the Parliament to come up with a new law which would deal with offences of mob lynching.

“The government hasn’t come up with any comment in the past two days though it could have made a suggestion in the ongoing monsoon session in Parliament on Wednesday. It seems the government does not wish to do anything,” Yechury said.

‘Will focus on alliances in states’

Speaking on the 2019 general elections, the CPI (M) general secretary said, “Rather than declaring a PM candidate, policies are important and that’s what we will be working on.” He said they will start alliances in states beginning from now and the national alliance will be looked at after the elections. The party will be focusing on Jammu and Kashmir too, he said.

On the recent election in Tripura and West Bengal, he said the opposition candidates were threatened and did not let them file nominations. “On this, all left parties are going to protest outside the Parliament on July 24.”

He further talked about the crisis in farm sector and said it is growing. “We are going to protest on August 9 and September 5 for demanding a law for the payment of minimum support price offered to farmers and to realistically decide this price by taking into account all the expenditure of the farmer.”

Heated arguments ensue at meet

During the meeting of Punjab State Committee of CPI (M) on Thursday, heated arguments ensued between the members, leaders and Yechury when they were discussing their course of action. According to the information, the argument was related to funds of the party.
