Warring’s Amrita on the job ‘for people’s sake’

-- 01 May,2019

Bathinda, May 1

Pitted against the Badals in Bathinda, Congress’ Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has found a tireless campaigner in wife Amrita, who has been on a whirlwind tour of the constituency for more than a week now.
Entrusted with the task of covering 400 of the 600 villages in the Lok Sabha segment, she holds meetings in more than a dozen villages, besides addressing another five- six in urban areas every day, from 8 am till 11 pm. The day her husband’s candidature was announced, she held meetings in 14 villages.

Amrita said, “I am doing it for a cause. I always believe in giving back to society, which is also the tagline of my NGO. The passion to serve people keeps me going.” Mother of two, 12-year-old daughter Aekom and nine-year-old son Amaaninder, Amrita runs Aasra Foundation which works in the field of education and healthcare.
“You weigh all pros and cons when making a small decision in your life. You will now decide on electing a leader who will represent you at the Centre for five years. Therefore, think hard before you vote,” she tells the crowds. Targeting women voters, she takes potshots at two-time MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, asking: “Can they can even get close to her?” She also makes it a point to mention the “decade-long misrule” as well as the sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib followed by police firing at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan.

Amrita says the constituency lacks basic infrastructure. “People don’t have access to clean drinking water. The plight of roads, government schools and healthcare centres is dismal. A lot needs to be done to ensure equitable development in the constituency.”

On the poll battle, she says: “It is the people who give you power and you should always stand by them.” Unfazed by protests, she blames rival candidates for the same. “We are taking it in our stride. None of these tactics will help the Badals. Nothing can demotivate us,” she signs off.
