CAMPAIGN FOR MUNICIPAL POLLS TO END TODAY (DECEMBER 15)- DC

Jalandhar, December 15- The ongoing campaign for the election of 80 wards of the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ), 26 wards of Municipal Committees Bhogpur and Goraya and 26 wards of Nagar Panchayat Bilga and Shahkot in the district would come to halt tomorrow at 4 pm.

Divulging the details, Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Mr. Varinder Kumar Sharma said that no person would convene, hold or attend any public meeting in any polling area during the period of 48 hours ending with the hour fixed for the conclusion of the poll for any election in that area. Exhorting the candidates to avoid campaign after 4pm on December 15, he said that the candidates could carry on door-to- door campaign in their respective constituencies. Mr. Sharma said that the district administration was committed for free, fair and transparent election during these polls.

The Deputy Commissioner said that already 5500 officers/ officials have been assigned the duties to ensure smooth and hassle free polling in the district. Mr. Sharma further said that polling for the civic bodies would take place of December 17 from 8.00 am to 4.00 pm. He said that in accordance with the instructions contained in the Presiding Officers Diary instruction 69, all electors present at the Polling Station at the hour of the close of poll would be entitled to cast their votes. Mr. Sharma said that counting of votes would take place after the close of poll on the polling station itself.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that in pursuance of Rule 74 (2) of the Punjab Municipal Election Rules, 1994, the State Election Commission has designated the Presiding Officers of the concerned Polling Station/Booth in Municipal Corporation and four Municipal Councils polls as to be Assistant Returning Officers for the purpose of counting of votes in respect of general elections to be held on December 17.
