-- 25 February,2019

Chandigarh, February 25

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Harpal Singh Cheema and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Jai Kishan Rori, on Monday presented some consumers before the media persons on Sabha Complex of the Assembly who had received hefty power bills worth several thousands for one and two room tenements using two bulbs and one fan and so on.

On the occasion, a distraught Tolemajra (Kharar) resident Darshan Singh informed the media that he was shocked to receive a whopping bill for Rs 7.53 lakh. He added that he had been receiving hefty bills for the past three months or so.

Cheema said that Gurpreet Singh of Nangal Faujgarh had come with a bill for Rs 26 thousands, Sarup Singh for Rs 49 thousands for consuming 121 units, which, they said was beyond their comprehension. Major Singh, another resident of Tolemajra showed a bill worth Rs 25, 796 for using three bulbs in the household. Those who turned up to show up their whopping bills to the media included the poor and ‘dalit’s. Cheema said both the preceding BJP-SAD and now the Captain government were responsible for the muddle.

Cheema said that the poor consumers were left to fend for themselves because of the long-term agreement signed between the then government and private power plant players. He pointed out that under the anti-people and anti-state agreements, the state dispensation had to shell out Rs 2800 crore even if they did not produce a single unit of power.

Rori said on the occasion said that the government, electricity department and the private companies had played a cruel joke with the poor consumers forcing them to pay their hefty bills through their noses.  Rori demanded that the Dalits may be provided free power up to 200 units and the poorest of the poor consuming up to one kw may be allowed free up to 200 units.
