Delhi: Cong finally enters seat talks after AAP announced candidates

-- 05 March,2019

New Delhi: Congress Rahul Gandhi has called the leaders of Delhi unit to discuss the possibilities of an alliance with Aam Aadmi Party for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, earlier this month, AAP had declared candidates for six of Delhi’s seven seats, accusing Congress of refusing an alliance.

Congress’s Ahmed Patel and AAP’s Sanjay Singh are chief negotiators for the alliance formation.

According to sources, AAP has now offered two seats to Congress in Delhi and open for alliance in Punjab as well. Congress, however, is holding out for three seats.

Another report states that the formula under discussion is to share three seats each out of seven and for one seat, the two parties are in talks to field a joint candidate.

In a recent public meeting, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that he was “tired” of convincing the Congress for an alliance in general elections to defeat BJP.

“If there is an alliance, the BJP will lose all the seven Lok Sabha seats it currently has in Delhi,” Kejriwal said at a recent rally. “I don’t know what they have in their minds,” he further said.

In 2014 general elections, BJP won all seven seats of Delhi but AAP found tremendous support. In 2015 assembly elections, AAP won 67 of Delhi’s 70 seats, the Congress drew a blank.
