Modi’s push for generic medicines a big relief for common man: Tarun Chugh

-- 08 May,2017

Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal to bring in a law making it mandatory for the doctors across the country to probe low-cost generic medicines, BJP National Secretary Tarun Chugh has urged the doctors to respect the intention of the Prime Minister in the interest of common man of India.

Chugh said it was also appreciable that after the announcement by the Prime Minister, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has directed doctors to prescribe generic medicines. He said it was also good that the MCI has asked the state governments, state medical boards, hospitals and medical colleges that they should direct the doctors registered by or serving with them that if he or she was found violating the directive, a disciplinary action could be initiated against him / her and their registration could be cancelled.

The BJP leader said that though the MCI had notified its decision on generic drugs in the year 2016 and advised the doctors to prescribe generic medicines but the matter was taken seriously only after Prime Minister Modi announced that his government could bring a law to curb the practice of prescribing only expensive branded medicines.

Recalling that the government’s initiative to provide relief to heart-patients by bringing down the prices of stents was welcomed by the people of the country, Chugh said the decision to prescribe generic medicines could bring relief to a much wider section of society.

He said that as medicines consume a major part of the medical expenses, the prescription of generic medicines instead of branded ones would change the scenario in health services. Chugh, however said that the public welfare idea could be a success only if the doctors tried to implement the directives honestly and dutifully.

He said it was highly unfortunate that most of the companies, in order to churn out maximum profit, were offering gifts and even free foreign travel to doctors for luring them to prescribe their expensive drugs.
