SAD asks EC to disqualify Lalli Majitha

Amritsar,  The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today demanded the immediate disqualification of Congress Majitha candidate Sukhjinder Singh Lalli Majithia for breaking a sworn oath not to distribute money or liquor to influence voters in the assembly elections.

In a statement here, SAD spokesman Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said with the nabbing of three close associates of Lalli Majithia while distributing money and liquor last night, it was clear that Lalli Majithia had abused a sworn oath. “The Election Commission should take strict note of this and act against Lalli Majithia immediately”, he added.

Dr Cheema said it was shocking that fearing a humiliating defeat at the hands of SAD candidate and Revenue minister Bikram Majithia, the Congress candidate had directed his close associates to indulge in despicable activities. He said this kind of behaviour was a last ditch gamble of a frustrated loser who knew his game was up.

The SAD spokesman while asking for stern action said while one of the Congress candidate’s associate – Balwinder Singh had been nabbed with crates of liquor by an Election Commission observer, two others – Mohan Singh alias Mohni and Om Prakash Gabbar were caught by the people while bribing voters. He said Balwinder was Senior Vice President of the Majitha Congress.Mohni was Vice President while Gabbar was a senior party leader. He said all three had been handed over to the police.

Stating that the party would file a formal complaint to the EC also, Dr Cheema said it was the bounden duty of the Commission to send out a clear message to Punjabis by initiating strict action against Lalli Majithia. “This is necessary to instil faith in Punjabis that the EC is scrupulous in all its dealings and does not shy away from handing out the most severe punishment to those who disobey its edicts and indulge in wilful wrongdoing”, he added.
