Seven people killed and five injured in road accident in Ambala

Seven people were killed and five others injured after the two SUVs they were travelling in were hit by an unidentified heavy vehicle here in the wee hours of Saturday.

Twenty-one people from Chandigarh had hired two Taveras and were on their way to Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh.

According to information, one of the SUVs developed a snag near the Drive-In resort here. Meanwhile, a heavy vehicle hit it from behind and fled.The deceased have been identified as Kavita (36), Ranjana (17), Harshita (9), Asha (46), Piyush (5), and drivers Suresh (45) and Manoj.

The five injured were taken to the Civil Hospital here, where three of them–Palak, Sunita and Renuka–were referred to the PGI, Chandigarh.

One of the injured, Palak, a BA first-year student of Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, said they had started from Chandigarh for Vrindavan at around 11.30 on Friday night.

“Kavita, her daughters Ranjana and Harshita, Asha, Renuka and her son Yashasvi were among those travelling with us. Besides, there were around 10 people in the second vehicle.”

Renuka, another injured, said, “There was engine oil leakage in the vehicle following which our driver parked the vehicle on the roadside and started inspecting it. The second vehicle was also summoned and both drivers tried to fix the problem. Meanwhile, we fell asleep. All of a sudden, there were loud screams. I have no idea what happened.”

Superintendent of Police Aastha Modi, who reached the Civil Hospital, said, “The drivers were trying to fix the vehicle when a heavy vehicle hit the SUVs from behind and also dragged one of them a fair distance.”

Forensic teams had visited the spot and efforts were on to identify the vehicle; CCTV footage from the nearby toll plaza was also being obtained, the SP said.

A case has been registered at Sadar police station in Ambala City.
