Sharapova rolls into quarterfinals

Maria Sharapova surged into the Tianjin Open quarterfinals on Thursday as she pursues her first tournament victory since her return from a doping ban. The former world No. 1 defeated Magda Linette of Poland 7-5 6-3.
Sharapova, a five-time Major winner, is now ranked a lowly 86 in the world and she needed a wildcard to enter the tournament. She saw off 71st-ranked Linette in just over 98 minutes to reach only her second quarterfinal since her return to action.
Wozniacki, Svitolina withdraw
Hong Kong: Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki and top seed Elina Svitolina, who have both qualified for the season-ending WTA Finals, withdrew from the Hong Kong Open through injury on Thursday.
Wozniacki pulled out before her match against Lizette Cabrera with elbow pain. Svitolina failed to recover from a right leg injury to start her match against world No. 114 American Nicole Gibbs.

Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia became the eighth and final player to qualify for the season-ending WTA Finals in Singapore after Britain’s Johanna Konta withdrew from the Kremlin Cup in Moscow due to a foot injury.
