Suicide by cop: Kin, activists block highway

-- 12 June,2017

ludhiana, June 12
The family members of Constable Amanpreet Kaur, whose body was found hanging from a ceiling fan in a restroom at the Jodhan police station on Friday evening, today blocked the Mullanpur-Raikot highway in protest.
The protest later shifted to Sudhar. The protesters were demanding arrest of the Jodhan police station Munshi, Nirbhay Singh, before conduct of the postmortem and cremation of the body. Nirbhay has already been booked for abetment of suicide.
The blockade was lifted late in the afternoon after DIG, Ludhiana, Yurinder Singh Hayer, assured protesters of strict action against the accused. Investigations revealed that residents of Khadoor and Akalgarh villages, besides kin of the deceased, Aman Preet Kaur, blocked the Mullanpur-Raikot highway, near the Civil Hospital here at 10 am.
Activists of various social, political and trade organisations supported the dharna, which was addressed by LIP legislator Simranjit Singh Bains, former legislator and CITU vice-president Tarsem Jodhan, besides the CITU central committee member, Santokh Singh Gill.
While accusing the police of shielding the accused, speakers demanded that the guilty should be arrested without any delay.
Meanwhile, policemen on duty seemed helpless when protesters stopped the ambulance carrying the body of the deceased to the mortuary and insisted that they would not allow the authorities to conduct a postmortem till the accused was arrested.
